Your Guide to Surviving – and even Thriving – as a Student in University

Being a university student has its own set of challenges – but there are a lot of thrills, as well. If you are a first-time uni student, this could be one of the most interesting times of your life. That being said, you should do everything you can to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Being in university can indeed be a trying time, but if you handle it right, you can emerge a winner. Here, then, is your guide to surviving – and even thriving – as a student in university.

Learn how to budget

The fact is that many uni students have a difficult time when it comes to their finances. But you don’t have to be completely penniless. There are some things you can do to save a bit of money. You can take advantage of a pre-paid card where you can add a specific amount each month to serve as your ‘disposable income.’ This could be used for such things as food, going out, and other expenses. Of course, you also need to make sure that you keep important expenses – such as bills and rent – separate. By doing this, you should be able to stick to your budget and even keep track of what you are spending.

If you want to supplement your budget in an easy and fun way, you can even try your hand at online bingo games. Lots of sites offer a bingo giveaway expressly for uni students, and who knows, you may even win a prize or two.

Learn your limits

Socialising could very well take up a lot of your time. But whilst spending time with friends is all well and good, you shouldn’t let it take over your life. Learn your limits. Even if you are tempted to stay out all night, don’t do it. Learn how to control your will and not succumb to peer pressure.

Learn how to plan your meals

If you are on a tight budget (and who isn’t?) you could certainly benefit from planning your meals. Before you shop for food, make a menu of what you will eat during the week. This will help you stay within your allotted budget and make you eat healthier meals as well. It’s also important to set aside a bit of your budget for snacks, but at least you won’t go overboard.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Being a uni student (especially when you are a fresher) can take a bit of adjustment. And if you feel that you are in over your head, you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help. Help is always there when you need it. Financial help can be had if you know where to look, and you can even ask for maintenance loans to help you out.
