Sri Lanka Ready to Take Revenge on India in the Opening Match of Nidahas Trophy 2018

Sri Lanka is all set to host India and Bangladesh for a Tri-nation Hero Nidahas Trophy T20 tournament in the upcoming month of March. The series is held in celebration of Sri Lanka’s 70 years of independence. It also happens to be 70 years since the birth of Cricket in the country. The double jubilation is both an honor and a platform for Sri Lanka to bounce back into the fray after a less than desirable run last year against its neighbour, India.

The event kicks-off with the host nation facing its current archenemy – India in the opening match on 6th March at R Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo. It is bound to be a match fraught with tension as both the teams has something to prove. India would love to retain the reigning crown as the front runner in South Asian Cricket, while Sri Lanka will try its level best to topple the neighbour who has repeatedly thwarted its chance of winning many a series title the past few months.
The Tale of the Two Neighbours

The story of the Nidahas Trophy began two decades ago in 1998 when Sri Lanka graciously invited India and New Zealand to be part of its celebration of the country’s 50 years of Independence. The triangular tournament ended with India winning the title by beating Sri Lanka in a close match – by a mere 6 runs.
Flash forward to the year 2017 – Sri Lanka’s tour of India in the months of November – December did not bode too well for its team either. The statistics reflect the team’s performance in great detail – India swept Sri Lanka off the game with the titles in all formats – 1-0 (2 drawn) in the Test Series, 2-1 in the ODI series, and 3-0 in the T20i series.

Adding salt to injury, the Indian team is in a great shape with the taste of continued victory still fresh in their minds. Sri Lanka is sure to come in with all guns blazing to snatch the first match from their rivals to gain a psychological advantage. The first match will set the tone for the rest of the matches in the tournament. It is to the team’s advantage to bag that match with nigh a doubt if it hopes to win back the prestigious Nihadas Trophy.
